In November of 1905, they changed the die for the 1905-S, and the most visible difference is the serif on the “1”. On “type 1”, before the die change, the top serif was curved. After the die change in “type 2”, the “1” has a straight serif and, is considerably scarcer and, considerably more valuable.
This is not a pleasing coin to look at and I wish I could tell you otherwise. There’s a bad nick on Lady Liberty’s face, several nicks on her thigh, and much chatter in the fields, front and back. It looks like it was dipped. It’s a shame because it’s a very hard date.
